Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen as Danny Kaye sang and he was right. This bustling city, the capital of Denmark, which sits besides the sea has a long tradition. It was originally a port called Kiopmanhafn, but that was in 1167, it then became the first European royal city when King Erik made it his home in 1417. The Amalienborg Palace is home to the current monarch, Queen Margrethe ll so it really is royal Copenhagen.
When you think of Copenhagen, you think of the Little Mermaid, the famous statue from the story by Denmarks' favourite son, Hans Christian Anderson, who sits on her own tiny island and is a must see on everybodys list of things to do. With a city this old there are plenty of historic sites to see, the Kronborg Castle, set on an island with one of the longest halls in Europe then there is the Tower, built in 1642 as an astronomical observatory now gives some splendid views of the city where you can observe the Copenhagen architecture.
Copenhagen is not all history, the Danes are noted for their love of design and there are some very exciting new design features in Copenhagen such as the Ice Bar at Copenhagen Hotel 27 or you can visit the famous Danish Design Centre where there are some fine examples of Copenhagen furniture and other design features. When shopping you will not want to miss buying some Royal Copenhagen porcelain which is some of the best in the world.
Your time in Copenhagen will not be wasted by a visit to the Tivoli Gardens, one of the worlds oldest amusement parks which features the oldest wooden roller coaster still in use.
A flight to Copenhagen for a long weekend break or even a full two week vacation at a Copenhagen hotel will be a holiday to remember.
