The map of Italy is now stable but it has not always been so. Italy as a country is relatively new but its history is ancient, going right back to Rome and beyond. That is what makes this such a fascinating country. Rome is the capital of Italy but it was once the name of the whole country which stretched from the very north of England, right down to Egypt in the south. The Roman remains, like the Coliseum and the Pantheon are blended into the Medieval piazzas with their fountains and churches proliferate. The Vatican, a separate state within Rome, is the centre of Christianity with the magnificent St Peters' cathedral decorated by Michelangelo, Bellini and the other great Renaissance artists its centrepiece. Yet there are many other churches in Rome where work of the masters can be found.
The surrounding area holds a great interest for those on their Italy vacation, just north lies the beautiful lake of Bracciano besides which is the magnificent castle that has been the venue of many celebrity weddings, the last being Tom Cruises. As well as the many lakes around Rome, it is also very close to the sea and enjoys some of Italys' finest beaches. Yet Italy is not just Rome, there is the unique Venice with its many canals and fine Venice hotels, there is Florence whose name is synonymous with Renaissance art, Naples with the nearby Pompeii and Milan, home of contemporary fashion and a shopaholics paradise.
